In the last semester in college, my hair starting falling out. Here is the story of what happened, and how I regrew it.
My hair has always been fine and pin straight, but the last semester it started to slowly start coming out in clumps. At first, I tried to convince myself that it wasn’t that big of a deal. Till more and more began to come out. In the shower, in my brushes, just sitting down. My widow’s peak was soon gone and I could begin to see my scalp before long.
I was mortified, I was scared, and I didn’t know what was going on. A lot of people that I talked to about it said it was just stress, including a doctor I went to see. But I know myself well enough to know that stress doesn’t do that to me.
The first doctor said you lose up to 100 hair strands a day so I shouldn’t worry about it. But I knew that what was happening was not normal for me. I finally went to see a second doctor who did my blood work. She found out that my iron levels were just about zero. Due to this, my body decided keeping my hair in wasn’t it’s top priority.
She immediately had me start to supplement my diet with iron pills and change my diet to include more iron-rich foods. The results were almost immediate. The hair loss stopped. I then went to a dermatologist and a stylist who gave me more recommendations and that is when the hair growth began again.
Below are my top tips for how I regrew my hair, and I hope if you are experiencing something similar they help. Please leave in the comments your story or tips I would love to hear them.
- See a doctor. No one knows your body better than you if you feel like something is off you can explain to them what is happening and they will be able to do blood work and do their best to get to the cause of the problem.
- Patience. The photo above is a 15-month difference. Your hair grows in cycles, you have to be patient with it. It is scary and for me, I did not even want to go out into the public. You will get “baby hairs” then more will fall out and so forth. You just have to listen to your body.
- Supplements. As with anything you should check with your doctor before launching a full range of supplements but below are what I found the most effective:
Iron: At first I was taking iron twice a day, eventually my doctor dropped it down to once a day, and now every other day after my blood work finally came back normal. Make sure you take it with food and ease into it, it can cause stomach aches at first.
Hair, Skin & Nails: I started with taking straight biotin but then found this more affordable option, and it is chalk full of other vitamins (A, C, & E which is great for hair and skin). The Vitamin C was especially important because it helped my iron absorb into my system easier.
4. Products: I began to go to my stylist about three months after I started losing my hair, I went in for a deep condition off of a Groupon because I figured I should take care of the hair I still have. While she was combing through it clumps just kept coming out and I was in tears. We talked for a while and she recommends the following products which I swear by now. I still go to her today as she has been with me through almost the entire loss and regrowth process and she understands my needs.
Nioxin System Thinning System: This is a great system for those with thinning hair, it is a little pricey but the cheapest way to do is to get the big bottles off of amazon, they last for a long time and are cheapest on amazon. The shampoo focuses on cleaning out buildup on the scalp to allow new growth to happen. I swear by these products and have not used anything else since learning about them.
Roots by Lush: Another product that focuses on the root, it is minty and smells fresh. I love lush products. My stylist actually got me this as a gift for our “one-year anniversary” (I seriously love her if you can’t tell). I use it once a week, it keeps my hair soft and I’ve noticed more “baby hairs” around my hair line since using it.
5. Diet: My doctor recommended the following foods due to being iron rich and full of good omega fats:
- Red meat – Full of iron that is naturally occurring that I need to stay healthy
- Seafood (especially salmon) – Full of omega-3’s enable you to grow hair and keep it healthy
- Dark green leafy vegetables (especially spinach) – More omega-3 acids, magnesium, and iron. Which are all needed for hair
- Eggs – Full of b-vitamins, aka biotin.
- Avocados – More healthy fats
An A+ day of eating for hair health for me would look like:
- 2 egg scramble with spinach and vegetables, served with avocado
- Steak and leafy green salad with olive oil dressing
- Salmon and veggies
